On 2012-01-27, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a recall regarding Britax, Chaperone Infant Car Seat / Child Restraint System due to a potential risk of injury hazard. This product sold new beginning in September 2010.

This was the 1st recall of Carseats / Child Seats in 2012. Since 2005, there have been approximately 50 similar recalls, involving about 8 million product units. Click here to see images of other recently recalled Carseats / Child Seats.

What is the problem?

The rivet used to attach the harness adjuster to the shell may have been improperly installed. As a result, the harness adjuster may detach from the shell. Should the harness adjuster detach from the infant car seat shell the harness straps will not properly secure the child resulting in increased risk of injury in a vehicle crash.

Britax CHAPERONE Infant Car Seats manufactured between September 1, 2010 and April 30, 2011, with the following model numbers:
E9L692J (BLACK/SILVER)
E9L692K (RED)
E9L692L (COWMOOFLAGE)
E9L692M (GREEN)

BRITAX WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND PROVIDE REPAIR KITS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL AND MAILING OF THE KITS IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT FEBRUARY 6, 2012 UNTIL THEN, ANY SEATS ON WHICH THE HARNESS ADJUSTER HAS DETACHED WILL BE REPLACED.
