On 2012-03-06, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published an expanded recall regarding Discovery Kids Animated Marine and Safari Lamps due to a potential burn & fire hazard. This product sold new beginning in July 2009 for about $10. It was originally recalled on 2010-02-09.

What is the problem?

A defect in the lamp's printed circuit board can cause an electrical short, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers.

How can I tell if I own this product?

This recall involves the Discovery Kids Animated Marine Lamp with model number 1627121 or 1628626 and the Animated Safari Lamp with model number 1627124 or 1628626.All models have batch numbers beginning with "2". The decorative lamps are silver in color and feature rotating films with marine or safari scenes. "Discovery Kids" is printed on the front top left corner. The batch number is an 11 digit number located on the bottom of each unit. The model number can be found on the bottom of the packaging.

Similar lamps sold by a different company were subsequently recalled in June 2011 and July 2012.

UPDATE 03/06/2012: The CPSC reannounced this recall. Sales dates have expanded. "Due to an error," some of the recalled items previously sold by Meijer were again offered for sale at discount retailers, dollar stores, liquidation firms, flea markets and thrift stores. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell recalled products. If you own this item or a similar item and already checked to make sure it was not recalled, please check again.

These items were sold new⁺ at Mass merchandisers, department, drug and hardware stores nationwide, online and through direct sales from July 2009 through July 2011 for about $10.
