Expanded Recall: Fisher Price Trikes and Tough Trikes toddler tricycles

On 2012-03-06, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published an expanded recall regarding Fisher Price Trikes and Tough Trikes toddler tricycles due to a potential laceration hazard. This product sold new beginning in January 1997 for about $25. It was originally recalled on 2010-09-30.

This was the 1st recall of products in the Ride-on Toys (w/out motors) category in 2012. Since 2005, there have been approximately 10 similar recalls, involving about 10 million product units.

What is the problem?

A child can strike, sit or fall on the protruding plastic ignition key resulting in serious injury, including genital bleeding.

How can I tell if I own this product?

This recall involves the Fisher-Price Trikes and Tough Trikes toddler tricycles with model numbers listed in the chart below and that have either a disc-shaped or D-shaped pretend key. The model numbers are located under the seat in the storage compartment. The trikes are intended for children 2 to 5 years of age. The pretend keys are located about 3 inches in front of the seat and protrude at least 5/8 inches above the trike's body. The trikes manufactured after June 16, 2010 are not included in this recall. These trikes have a modified key in a flattened D shape (see picture below) and a manufacturer run number higher than 1670Q2. The run number indicates the trike was manufactured on the 167th day of 2010 or on June 16, 2010. The run number is found under the seat below the model number.

UPDATE 03/06/2012: The CPSC reannounced this recall. Sales dates on the Barbie Tough Trikes (Model M5727) and Kawasaki Tough Trikes (Model N6021) have expanded. "Due to an error," some of the recalled items previously sold by Meijer were again offered for sale at discount retailers, dollar stores, liquidation firms, flea markets and thrift stores. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell recalled products. If you own this item or a similar item and already checked to make sure it was not recalled, please check again.

These items were sold new+ at Mass merchandise stores nationwide from January 1997 through July 2011 for about $25.

Incidents & Injuries Reported as of Recall Date

CPSC and Fisher-Price are aware of 10 reports of incidents resulting in injury. Six of the incidents required medical attention after young girls, ages two to three years old, fell against or on the protruding disc-shaped and D-shaped pretend key.
