A New Era for Product Recalls?

When the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) was passed in 2008, we predicted that the more stringent safety requirements would result in a higher number of product recalls. Were we wrong?

Looking at the overall number recalls announced in 2009 and 2010, compared to what one would have predicted for those years prior to the CPSIA being passed, there is not much of a diference, no difference really. So, did the CPSIA have an impact on recalls at all?

To get a more complete picture, we also looked at recalls of children's products, the target of most of the CPSIA's new regulations, versus recalls of products not intended for children. These results told a much different story. Not only did the CPSC recall more children's products post-CPSIA, but there appears to also be an unintended consequence - fewer recalls of other types of unsafe products.
