Recall: Sport Cap 2.0 water bottle spouts


On 2010-05-05, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a recall regarding Sport Cap 2.0 water bottle spouts due to a potential choking hazard. This product sold new beginning in April 2009 for about $5 to $28.

What is the problem?

The water bottle spouts can break or crack, posing a choking hazard to children and adults.

How can I tell if I own this product?

The Sport Cap 2.0 water bottle spouts are made of black plastic and have an attachment loop. Klean Kanteen is stamped into the side of the cap.

The following additional information was included in the related Health Canada recall:

Recalled Sport Cap 2.0 lids can be identified by a polished (shiny) finish on the top of the spout. Spouts with a dull (matte) finish are not included in this recall. See the image here to compare the finishes on the spout.

Sport Caps that have a silver dot on the hang tag are not included in this recall. Also, Klean Kanteen stainless steel bottles and other caps are not included.

Information on where these items sold new+: Outdoor sports stores, including LLBean, and grocery and specialty stores nationwide, and on the Web at from April 2009 through April 2010 for $5 for the spout and between $15 and $28 when sold with a stainless steel water bottle.

First, stop using the item.

Incidents & Injuries Reported as of Recall Date

The firm has received six reports of incidents of the water bottle spouts breaking or cracking in children's mouths as they were drinking from the bottles. No injuries have been reported.
