WeMakeItSafer Makes “Out with the Old” Easier, Safer and More Eco-Friendly

Oakland, CA (PRWEB) August 25, 2011: Today, WeMakeItSafer announces a new feature that enables users of its Items I Own application to quickly post on social networks the items they no longer need.

Giving away unwanted items benefits everyone and helps protect the environment, but often safety is a concern. According to WeMakeItSafer, up to 80% of products recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) remain in homes without the owners’ knowledge that the items were recalled. The new “Post this Item” feature encourages users to check items before passing them on to friends and family.

“You can think of Items I Own as a highly functional Home Inventory. It is a place for you to keep track of your belongings and manage product-related tasks, but with the added benefit of a sophisticated system dedicated to identifying safety problems,” explains Jennifer Toney, CEO and co-founder of WeMakeItSafer.

The primary purpose of “Items I Own” is to check and monitor belongings for safety recalls, but the tool includes several other features to make consumers’ lives easier. Users of Items I Own have always been able to gather and track many types of product data, from insurance information to details about when and to whom an item was given away. Today’s release takes this functionality a step further, enabling users to post the items they wish to give away on facebook and twitter directly from their accounts.

“Just last week, a mom posted on our neighborhood chat board that she had a stroller to give to whoever wanted it,” said Toney. “Would-be takers were leery, though, because this particular brand had had several recalls over the past year.”

Many parents have recently stocked up for back-to-school and will be looking to give away the things their children no longer need. By using the “Post this Item” buttons in their Items I Own accounts, users can assure their friends and family that the items they are giving away have been checked for recalls. A simple Transfer feature enables them to pass along the recall monitoring and alerts to an item’s new owner.

I hope this system blocks cribs from being posted in the short term — with the new standards going into effect on 6/28/11, it is very unlikely that anyone has a crib, even if it hasn’t been recalled, that is legal to sell or give away.

Thank you, Nancy. Yes, the system disables “Post this Item” buttons for cribs that were purchased before June 28, 2011 and, therefore, are unlikely to comply with the new safety standards. Users with cribs purchased new before that date who have actual knowledge (e.g a letter or certificate from the manufacturer) that their crib is compliant, are asked to contact us for assistance.
