New, interactive charts answer questions on everything from number of children’s product recalls to total retail value of products recalled in a given year.

WeMakeItSafer, Inc. announced the availability of data on US consumer product recalls issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) from 1999 through September 2011. The data is presented in a series of interactive charts available on the company’s website and includes a vast array of information such as the number of recalls issued in each product category, the number of injuries reported at the time of recall and the estimated retail value of products recalled each year.
Much of the data available has never before been summarized, nor has such a comprehensive body of information been available in one place. WeMakeItSafer says that is largely due to the inconsistent and unstructured nature of publicly available recall information.
“Although information from government agencies continues to improve over time, historically, data have not been available in a clean, reliable format that makes building applications and conducting statistical analysis in an efficient manner possible,” explains Jennifer Toney, CEO of WeMakeItSafer.
The company spent more than three years organizing, formatting and studying CPSC data to identify potential trouble spots, a process that culminated in the creation of a powerful database system that has the capacity to adapt and learn from each new recall.
“When we started this process, every recall was analyzed by humans, usually several at a time, while computers checked our work. Now, our computer programs do all the heavy lifting. We still use humans to verify that the system caught all the anomalies, of which there can be many in any given recall, but it is an amazingly intelligent and efficient system.”
WeMakeItSafer tracks over 100 points of data on recalls issued by the CPSC as well as child car-seat recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). WeMakeItSafer includes the NHTSA car seat recalls because, in their experience, consumers and industry leaders alike are often confused about which agency holds jurisdiction over the various types of car seats. WeMakeItSafer is able to separate the data for those who need it.
