WeMakeItSafer, the Google of Product Recalls

May 7, 2013 — By

We are happy to announce that, beginning today, in addition to the consumer product recalls issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) you can easily find information for recalls issued by:

  • Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
  • United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

What this means is that virtually EVERY PRODUCT you own is now covered by WeMakeItSafer’s Recall Product Search.

Before today, WeMakeItSafer covered durable consumer goods under the CPSC’s jurisdiction. That includes most products that remain in your home for more than a few months – things like appliances, baby gear, clothing, electronics, furniture, décor, toys, sporting goods, tools and hardware, etc.

It’s a lot of stuff! But today, we are adding even more. Beginning today, you will also be able to find information about recalls on food, drugs, cosmetics, pet care, medical devices and vehicles.

You can begin searching and checking your items for recalls right now using Recall Product Search. In the future, we will be adding new tools and features as well as some very cool integrations with our other applications.

Some of the cool new features you will notice right away on our new recall pages include:

Interactive Map of the USA

To help you quickly determine where those recalled food items were sold, we are publishing interactive maps that show the states affected by FDA and USDA recalls (ie, food, drugs, cosmetics and medical devices)

Filter by Allergy or other Reason for Recall

Have a milk allergy, but undeclared peanut recalls are not relevant? You can now filter through recalls based on what is important to you. If you do not have any allergies, you can focus on recalls related to contamination, such as salmonella and listeria, or defects.

Vehicles by Make + Model

Quick, what is the official model year of your car, truck or suv? Are you sure? Maybe that’s just the year you bought it. Manufacturers start selling models before the actual calendar changes, and, if you bought it used, are you sure the previous owner stated the year correctly?

Many of us are not 100% sure what the model year of our vehicle is. Now, you can see all recalls for your make and model on one page! Use the keyword search or select yours from this list of all Vehicle brands with recalls. If you do know your model year, select it to see only recalls relevant to that year.

Be sure to print out the list and take it to a nearby dealer to make sure your vehicle has been checked for all relevant recalls. As soon as these pages went live, Jennifer, our CEO tried it out for her car, a Toyota Highlander Hybrid and guess what?! A recall was issued just last month and she had not been notified. Her hybrid SUV, ”Hydi” as she lovingly refers to it, is currently being repaired by Toyota for free.
