Numbers presented are for the calendar years shown and include recalls announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
With the exception of deaths, yearly totals are rounded to the nearest multiple of five (5).
Occasionally, the CPSC will reannounce recalls for which new information has been provided, sometimes these reannouncements also include new injury information. In 2009 there were three such reannouncements with particularly high numbers of additional incidents reported.
Fire includes incidents where the fire was contained to the product as well as incidents where property damage and/or injury was reported.
Numbers presented represent the incidents, injuries, fire and property damage reported at the time of initial recall and should be treated as minimims. In the event of ambiguity, such as the case where the number of incidents is described in terms such as "few" rather than numbers, the smallest number needed to make the statement true was assumed.
