Numbers presented are for the calendar years shown and include recalls announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Yearly retail values are rounded to the nearest billion.
Estimated retail value is calculated for each recall by multiplying the average price per unit recalled by the number of units recalled. The total value shown for each year is the sum of the estimated per-recall values.
Approximately 50 recalls announced by the CPSC between 2006 and 2010 did not include unit-level and/or price-level detail. They were removed from the analysis. Values should be treated as "ballpark" estimates only.
